Artifact: Learning Module Lesson Plan with Rationale
Description:
GDIT 703 Courseware Design, Fall 2013
The goal of this assignment was to create lesson plans based on the online learning modules we created, along with rationales each week with modifications and reflections based on feedback:
- Learning modules need to be designed for use out of class time
- There is no requirement on the total number of modules to be created.
- Regardless of the number of modules, a total of 2 to 3 hours of learning material should be created (e.g., four 30 minute learning module, one 2-3 hour learning module)
- All components of this assignment should be posted in the Personal Blog.
- Requirements
- Lesson Plan
- Useful Resource 1: Strategies for Effective Lesson Planning
- Useful Resource 2: Lesson Plan Examples
- Useful Resource 3: Bloom's Taxonomy (Thank you, Jordan, for this resource)
- Lesson Material
- Develop non-formal lesson materials for your targeted audiences
- For most learners in non-formal settings, the learning activities should be fun and interesting. Learners should be able to recognize the personal value of what they are learning because if they are not interested they can easily cease their engagement. After brainstorming as many ideas as possible, once you decide on a learning activity, design learning experiences/materials around the activity to help learners attain the intended learning outcomes.
- Some of the activities recommended by experts, as to help learners attain the knowledge, attitudes, skills, aspirations, and behaviors related to the content, include (these are just a few samples):
- Field trips
- Role playing
- Puzzles
- Problem solving
- Skits
- Games and simulations
- Illustrated talks
- Tasks/Assignments
- Assessment Rubric
- Report - This is the most important part of the learning module assignment!
- Weekly Changes with Rationales
- Principles adopted
- Lesson Plan
Reflection:
While this particular artifact was something I am familiar with, I found it challenging, yet essential to my growth in assessing curriculum and if learning objectives were properly evaluated and met by students, particularly in the field of higher education. Personally, I was able to grow in my experience using the adult learning theory to develop lessons with the audience of higher education in mind. Planning for a variety of assessments provided an environment suitable for a diverse group of learners. Also, using formative and summative evaluations with this artifact demonstrates my knowledge of planning for possible revisions of the lessons based on student responses from the tasks and assignments used as evaluations. The rationales for changes and modifications really helped clarify the purpose and components necessary to develop a lesson or learning module that was not only complete, but with the needs of the learners in mind. Professionally, I was able to revise student evaluations and assignments based on feedback from my professor and apply such feedback in order to create a more well-rounded lesson from the perspective of adult learners, which was a new concept for me seeing as I come from an elementary background. The impact on student learning is that focus was put on the learning objectives of the learning modules. Reflection and revision can only improve lessons that directly impact the learning of the students.
