CONTENT KNOWLEDGE - ELEMENT 1: CREATING
Candidates demonstrate the ability to create instructional materials and learning environments using a variety of systems approaches.
Artifact: Microsoft Word Dissertation Tutorial for Mac Users
Description:
GDIT 703: Foundations of Instructional Technology, Summer 2013
The goal of this project was to create a digital tutorial on how to format the Microsoft Word dissertation template properly. The software used to complete this tutorial was Camtasia to record a step-by-step instructional video of how to properly edit the template according to the APA 6th edition manual. Camtasia allows users to record their onscreen activity in real time, which is great for how-to tutorials. This was my first experience using Camtasia and attempting to create a screencast for instructional purposes. The video posted below demonstrates my understanding and knowledge of the process of creating a screencast using a very systematic approach, as well as, using a variety of instructional tools provided by Camtasia in an online learning environment.

Reflection:
According to Januszewski & Molenda (2008), creating refers to "the research, theory, and practice involved in the generation of instructional materials, learning environments, and large teaching learning systems in many different settings, formal and conformal"(p.7). The importance of creating instructional materials as shifted to focus on the learners' perspective, preferences, and ownership of the learning process (Januszewski & Molenda, 2008). This particular digital tutorial was one of the first projects that I completed as part of my doctoral program at Duquesne University in Instructional Technology and leadership. Personally, I was able to use this artifact to grow in my knowledge of the basic components of Camtasia software, my skills in screencast development (tone of voice, timing, creating, editing for emphasis), and also boosting my self-confidence in providing instruction focusing on creating a video tutorial. It was important to keep in mind the learners' perspective, and use an aesthetic and procedural system approach to the design. This project also provided me with the opportunity to explore and use new instructional material for an online environment using a variety of tools for appealing to the learner that were specific to best practices for online learning (visual appeal, variety of images, tools for highlighting, emphasis, and simplified directions). Professionally, this artifact helped me grow in terms of my skills in following instructions for the APA style dissertation template model. Also, I was able to demonstrate my ability to learn a new software based on the adult learning theory of practice and implementation. I see this standard of creating a variety instructional materials and learning environments, such as Camtasia, impacting students in online environments in several ways. One impact consists of the ability to share knowledge and content in a digital format at the pace of individual learner. I also see students being able to use such tutorials in order to explore a variety of video and digital software, such as Camtasia, themselves in order to demonstrate their own learning exprerience. This can be for the purpose of individual projects, such as oral reports or creating digitized versions of storytelling.
